About the griffin

The logo of VU Amsterdam depicts the griffin, a creature of myth and fable which can be traced back to some of the earliest artworks to emerge from the Near East. The griffin has the body of a lion and the head and the wings of an eagle. It was absorbed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome, and also features in the history of Christianity.

The griffin represents the values embodied by VU Amsterdam. The spreading wings represent the quest for knowledge, in complete freedom. The possession of knowledge brings with it responsibilities and these have to be addressed conscientiously. The griffin’s feet, planted firmly on the ground, represent VU's commitment to the well-being of society as a whole. And like the griffin, VU Amsterdam cannot be summed up in a few words.
